Key takeaways

  • Start with travel dates and reward seats you can actually use.
  • Mile values are assumptions, not airline cash guarantees.
  • Welcome campaign stages depend on spending and other eligibility rules.
  • Compare fees and cash award charges before choosing an airline card.

Skywards and Etihad Guest credit cards earn different airline currencies with no universal fixed cash value. Compare your realistic redemption saving in AED, the card’s joining and annual fees, and the welcome spend stages before choosing an airline card.

Choose the airline you can actually use

Start with your likely departures from Dubai or Abu Dhabi, destinations, dates and flexibility. A large balance of miles is less useful when you cannot find the seats you need. Families travelling during school holidays should test realistic dates before placing a high value on a reward balance.

Keep earning and redemption separate. A card may earn more miles per purchase yet offer less practical value after its fees, category exclusions or the cash charges on an award booking. Compare a plausible trip with your normal travel alternatives rather than valuing every mile at the price of the most expensive cabin.

What the two Infinite cards advertise

Emirates NBD Skywards Infinite publishes a minimum monthly salary of AED 30,000, an AED 3,148.95 joining fee and an AED 1,575 annual fee from the second year. Its earning varies between domestic purchases, eligible international purchases and named travel or app categories. Optional Express Miles has its own recurring charge. Emirates NBD product terms.

Etihad Guest FAB Visa Infinite also publishes an AED 30,000 monthly salary minimum. The advertised annual fee is AED 2,500 before the tax assumption used in our model. Standard domestic general-retail earning is 3.5 miles per AED 10; the page also describes international and airline earning tiers. Paid accelerator enrolment is separate. FAB product terms.

These are product-level facts, not a personalised approval offer. Reduced-earning categories, promotion terms and tax treatment should be checked in the relevant key facts statements.

Why our mile values are assumptions

Dirham Perks models Skywards at AED 0.055 per mile and Etihad Guest at AED 0.050 per mile, for the comparison benchmark. These are illustrative editorial values, not published cash conversion guarantees. They do not establish that one airline programme is always worth more.

Calculate a redemption value using the cash fare you would actually buy, less the mandatory cash amount on the award, divided by the miles required. For example, if the comparable fare is AED 2,500 and the award requires AED 500 plus 40,000 miles, your calculated value is AED 0.050 per mile. If you would instead buy a suitable AED 1,700 fare, the effective comparison is lower.

Avoid inflating the calculation with a fare you would never pay. Include relevant baggage and refund differences, but keep the comparison consistent. A premium-cabin redemption can deliver strong mathematical value while still being poor use of your miles if you mostly need economical family travel.

Upgrade opportunities need live checking

Upgrades can be attractive when you already hold an eligible paid ticket and the miles requirement produces a good result. Check the exact fare’s upgrade eligibility, available upgrade inventory, cash charges and cancellation rules before transferring rewards or making a non-refundable purchase. Published card benefits do not guarantee an upgrade seat.

Both airline programmes change prices, redemption rules and availability. Search live in the Emirates Skywards programme and Etihad Guest programme for the actual route and dates. Treat any generic “sweet spot” as a search idea rather than a permanent promise.

Welcome miles are not all equally attainable

A joining reward and a spend-based campaign reward can have different triggers. Activation, joining-fee payment, customer eligibility, deadlines and exclusions matter. Premium campaigns can require spending substantially above an ordinary monthly budget.

Our forecast does not include an unverified promotional maximum simply because a bank displays it. FAB advertises a campaign ending 30 November 2026 with up to 220,000 miles and an AED 120,000 three-month spend target. That is equivalent to AED 40,000 a month, four times our benchmark spending. Our estimate separates the 55,000 regular activation miles from the campaign booster and includes only attainable additional stages under the recorded terms. At the benchmark it excludes the AED 120,000 spending stage; check the card detail breakdown for the activation-stage addition and full qualification rules. The Skywards forecast excludes promotional welcome miles until the customer’s applicable terms are established.

Do not move unnecessary purchases onto a card to make its headline value look better. A bonus that requires spending you do not need has a real cost outside the rewards formula.

Compare the complete first year

Use reward value plus the eligible bonus, then subtract joining fees, annual fees and any required plan costs. Optional accelerators should be modelled only if you plan to pay for them. Foreign transaction charges can offset international earning, so do not compare a miles rate in isolation.

Lounge visits, golf and airport services are deliberately excluded from our AED reward total. Their value depends on your use and often on spend or booking conditions. Price them separately only if they replace purchases you would genuinely make.

Try the spending matcher with your own expenses, then check reward availability for a likely trip. For many households, a straightforward cashback card will provide a more usable return. Airline cards become more compelling when the earning categories, actual redemptions and travel benefits all fit the same person.

Frequently asked questions

Is Skywards always worth more than Etihad Guest?

No. The illustrative comparison values do not establish a universal programme ranking. Your actual redemption can reverse the result.

Are all advertised welcome miles counted?

Only attainable stages under the model’s stated spending and eligibility assumptions are counted, with regular rewards included once.
