Key takeaways

  • A salary bonus and an annualised savings rate are different benefits.
  • Salary tiers and recognised payroll credits determine bonus eligibility.
  • Use the newer dated terms when a bank page also contains older FAQs.
  • Do not spend unnecessarily to unlock a higher savings rate.

UAE salary-transfer bonuses depend on the first qualifying salary, the bank’s payment tiers and the required commitment period. Savings rates are annualised interest or profit rates with their own balance, plan and transaction conditions, not the same thing as a joining bonus.

A salary-transfer bonus is a conditional payment. A savings rate is a return on an eligible balance over time. A prize draw is a chance of winning. They should not be added together as if each were a guaranteed joining reward.

Start with your salary, the amount you can actually leave in savings and your employer’s payroll process. Then check the account’s ordinary fees after the promotion. The best headline may be a poor fit if your salary misses a tier, a balance falls below a fee threshold, or a bonus requires a commitment you cannot maintain.

Mashreq NEO uses salary tiers

Mashreq’s current salary transfer page publishes joining cashback tied to the first salary credit. The baseline model in Dirham Perks follows these tiers:

Monthly salaryBase joining cashbackPotential early bird cashback
AED 5,000–9,999AED 100AED 100
AED 10,000–19,999AED 350AED 250
AED 20,000–49,999AED 1,000AED 800
AED 50,000 and aboveAED 2,500AED 1,500

Early bird cashback depends on receiving the qualifying first salary within 90 days of account opening. New-customer and bank-recognised salary-credit conditions still apply. An ordinary transfer into the account is not necessarily a salary credit.

For an AED 15,000 salary, the modelled base is AED 350, with a possible AED 250 early bird addition. The top headline of AED 4,000 applies to a different salary tier; it is not the expected payment for this example.

Check the payout and reversal terms

The dated Mashreq update for first salary on or after 1 August 2026 says the joining cashback is paid in 12 instalments. The page also contains older FAQ wording referring to six. Dirham Perks follows the newer dated update and flags the inconsistency. Confirm the governing document with the bank and retain your accepted offer.

The current update also describes reversal after two consecutive missing salary credits during the first 12 months. Record when your first credit actually arrives and check your employer’s payroll arrangements before changing accounts. A planning anniversary is a reminder to review the conditions; it is not permission to close an account without checking outstanding requirements.

Use the salary transfer tracker to model the dates and download calendar reminders. Its FAB and Emirates NBD modes are planning tools based on your entered commitment. They do not invent cash-bonus tiers where we have not verified an active offer.

Wio Salary plan has its own eligibility

Wio’s official Salary plan page states a general minimum monthly salary of AED 15,000, with AED 5,000 possible for employees of partner companies. It asks for salary transfer within two months and describes the Salary plan as free once qualifying salary arrives. Without that transfer, the customer can remain on the paid Plus plan.

The page currently advertises 3.25% p.a. on flexible Saving Spaces and 6% p.a. on one-month Fixed Saving Spaces, the latter subject to AED 5,000 minimum monthly spending. Credit cashback is advertised separately, up to 2% and capped at AED 2,500 monthly. Salary-plan eligibility does not guarantee a credit facility.

Check whether the lower employer-specific salary threshold applies to you before relying on it. Our account filter uses the general AED 15,000 threshold. The directory treats flexible savings and fixed-term savings as separate entries so their conditions remain visible.

Annualised rates are not monthly returns

At a hypothetical 6% p.a. rate, AED 20,000 held for 30 days produces approximately AED 99 using an illustrative actual/365 calculation: AED 20,000 × 0.06 × 30 ÷ 365. It does not produce AED 1,200 in one month. A bank’s actual day-count basis, accrual method and maturity dates govern the final amount.

Renewing a one-month space for a full year does not establish that today’s rate will remain available at each renewal. Review early-withdrawal rules and leave emergency money accessible. Do not manufacture card spending to unlock a savings rate: the extra spending can cost far more than the additional interest.

Mashreq’s NEO PLUS Saver page also distinguishes salary-linked and balance-linked qualifying paths. Check the applicable rate, eligible balance limit and how the average balance is calculated. The advertised maximum is insufficient for a personal return forecast.

Compare a realistic year

Write down the eligible cash bonus, expected savings return on your actual balance, and account or plan fees you expect to pay. Keep card rewards separate unless you will use that card and meet its conditions. Treat uncertain promotion payments as conditional, not money already available for your budget.

Before switching payroll, confirm the old account’s remaining commitments, the new bank’s first-credit deadline, fees during setup and the treatment of a missed salary month. Keep both the signed terms and employer confirmation. The bank account directory links to the official product pages and marks unknown fees or expiry dates so you can resolve them before applying.

Keep account and card comparisons separate

Salary-plan eligibility does not establish approval for a linked credit facility. Compare accounts in the bank account directory and assess any card separately against spending and affordability.

Frequently asked questions

Is 6% p.a. a 6% monthly return?

No. A p.a. rate is annualised. A 30-day illustration on AED 20,000 at 6% is about AED 99 using actual/365, subject to the bank’s actual calculation method.

Does transferring money count as salary?

Not necessarily. The bank must recognise the qualifying salary credit under its applicable terms.
