Key takeaways

  • Free for life, first-year free and spend-based waivers are different promises.
  • A card without an annual fee can still have borrowing and transaction charges.
  • A paid card can win when its additional eligible rewards exceed the fee.
  • Check product availability and your own package-specific conditions.

A free-for-life UAE credit card has a published ongoing annual-fee exemption; a first-year or spend-based waiver is a different promise. Check the renewal fee, conditions and current product availability before comparing rewards.

Free for Life vs First-Year and Spend-Based Fee Waivers

“Free for life” should mean no recurring annual card fee under the product’s applicable terms. “First year free” means the next year needs a fresh calculation. “Annual fee waived with spend” means the fee can return if you miss the stated threshold. These descriptions should not be used interchangeably.

Even a card without an annual fee can have finance charges, cash-advance costs, late-payment charges, foreign transaction fees or paid optional services. Use it as a payment method you settle in full, and evaluate those costs independently from the reward rate.

Mashreq’s published no-annual-fee option

Mashreq advertises its Cashback Credit Card as free for life and publishes an AED 5,000 monthly income minimum. Dining has a higher earning rate than several essential categories. Education, utility, fuel and other named categories earn a reduced rate, while payment-channel exclusions also matter. The partner cashback promotion lasts four months, with merchant-level caps. Mashreq card terms.

For a diner who already makes eligible purchases, the absence of an annual fee can be useful. For a household routing mostly education and bills, the same card may produce a much smaller return. Do not extrapolate the short partner promotion across a full year.

Duo is location- and reward-specific

Emirates NBD’s Abu Dhabi Duo campaign advertises no annual fee and an AED 12,000 minimum salary. Its generic August 2026 KFS lists joining and renewal charges, so confirm the offer-specific waiver in writing. The directory no longer treats this current offer as a verified permanent free-for-life promise. Confirm residence and campaign eligibility rather than assuming identical availability across the UAE. Official Abu Dhabi Duo offer.

Its core earn rate is expressed in Plus Points. Monthly spend thresholds and statement caps affect the result, and points redeemed for cash need conversion to AED. A zero annual fee does not make the advertised points percentage equivalent to cashback.

Standard Chartered Simply Cash Availability and ADIB Fees

Standard Chartered’s current Simply Cash page says it is not available to new clients. Existing holders have a first-year waiver and a later fee waiver linked to annual spending, with a published recurring fee if conditions are missed. It should not be presented as an open, unconditional free-for-life application. Standard Chartered existing-card terms.

Similarly, ADIB’s current Cashback Visa Covered Card page lists an annual fee; particular customer packages may waive it. A package-specific benefit does not establish a fee waiver for everyone. Read your own offer and the updated tariff rather than relying on an old comparison article.

Cinema perks need their own test

Buy-one-get-one cinema offers can be valuable when you regularly buy eligible tickets. Check the cinema chain, permitted ticket types, booking channel, monthly usage limit and minimum spend. Premium formats or private screenings may be excluded. The discount may also depend on booking directly through a specified website or app.

Value the offer using the tickets you would normally purchase. If two standard tickets would cost AED 90 and an eligible offer saves AED 45, that visit provides AED 45 of avoided spending. It does not provide the value of a premium ticket you never intended to buy.

Some fee-waived cards also require meaningful monthly spending for movie benefits. HSBC Live+, for example, publishes a monthly-spend condition for its cinema offer and a separate annual-spend condition for later annual-fee waiver. The two tests are different. HSBC Live+ conditions.

Dining discounts are useful only when used

Dining offers can be tied to selected venues, days, reservation methods or minimum bills. An advertised percentage saving may not apply to promotions, brunches, taxes or service charges. Confirm conditions at the venue before ordering.

Use actual avoided spending, not an estimated list of every possible benefit. If you rarely visit the participating locations, give that perk little or no value. Rewards should support the way you already live, not create a new spending habit to justify a card.

A paid card can still be the better fit

Compare annual rewards after caps with the recurring annual fee. A hypothetical fee-free card returning AED 1,200 annually delivers AED 1,200 before finance costs. A card with an AED 400 fee returning AED 2,000 delivers AED 1,600 on the same expenses. The paid product is better in that example only if those expenses and rates are genuinely eligible.

Keep first-year offers separate from ongoing return. Joining cashback and fee waivers can make the first year attractive while leaving a weaker card after renewal. Set a reminder before the annual fee date and review the current earning rules.

Keep the shortlist small and usable

Choose a primary card around your largest verified spending categories. Add a second only when its incremental return or a specific benefit justifies the extra statement and eligibility obligations. Unused cards can still complicate administration and future lending assessment.

Explore the free-for-life filter, compare up to three products, and read the source linked to each result. A sustainable reward setup is one you can manage without carrying a balance, overlooking conditions or spending to chase benefits.
